Lessons from the agentic era

By Viktoria Sargsyan Zaduryan

The agents taught me a lot, mostly by breaking things that were working.

Every agent I work with is brilliant, fast and a little too eager. Ask it to fix a button and it offers to rebuild the house.

So I started writing the lessons down as Claude skills, the way you’d leave a note on the fridge for a flatmate who means well. Copy one and give it to your agent.

You may find some rules restrictive. They were written while I was working with Sonnet 4.6 and other models in Cursor, and they were necessary. They’re written as Claude skills, but they work with any agent. For delicate or legacy code that needs careful testing, I still think they’re necessary. I have refactor PTSD, so yes, we’re going step by step.

Architectural Refactor Reasoning for People with Refactor PTSD

architectural-refactor-reasoning/SKILL.md

A reasoning skill for Claude that prevents bad refactors before they start. Gives Claude a structured mental model for planning refactors — risk assessment first, phased execution, no big-bang rewrites.

Who it's for · Developers using Claude in Cursor, Claude.ai projects, or any AI-assisted workflow. This is a protocol for AI-assisted solo development, not a team engineering standard.

How to use it · Copy the SKILL.md content into your Claude project instructions or paste it as context before any refactor conversation.

Why it exists · AI will happily refactor your entire codebase at 2am if you let it. This makes it think first.
